Director of Web Services

Christopher Tossas

Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering

How long have you been with miLEAD?

I have been involved in miLEAD since October 2020.

What is the focus of your research?

I construct computational models of arterial blood flow and ventricular mechanics to study pediatric cardiovascular diseases. The computational models I build are used to characterize the pathophysiology of different cardiovascular diseases and to help with surgical planning. In one of my projects, I worked with the Pediatric Cardiology team at Mott Children’s Hospital to virtually assess the effect of a proposed surgical intervention. The results of the model I built were central in the pediatric cardiology team’s decision to forgo the proposed operation due to unfavorable outcomes predicted by the computational model.

What are your career goals?

I strive to be a life sciences consultant to be involved in a wide variety of projects that aim to improve the healthcare of individuals and patient outcomes.

What roles have you played on projects?

As a consultant, I worked with a team on two separate projects to conduct comprehensive market analysis and competitive landscape research for the clients’ novel technologies. As a project manager, I led a team of consultants in providing a rigorous market analysis and competitive landscape to inform the client’s decision towards advancing their products. I did this by developing a project plan, and maintaining the team’s focus on completing the final deliverables of the project. As the Director of Web Services, I am responsible of updating miLEAD’s website to ensure that its in line with our company’s branding. I am continually adding functionality and features to optimize the use of our website for both clients and members of our organization. I am also responsible for managing the communication (i.e. emails, listservs, slack), and storage of our organization, and resolving any technical issues that our members face.

What led you so seek out milead?

After being interested in exploring career opportunities outside of academia, specifically consulting, I joined miLEAD to get a taste of what a consulting role would entail. I have thoroughly enjoyed every project I have been involved in and meeting everyone in the organization. The professional development opportunities that miLEAD offers have been the most impressive out of any other student organization I have been a part of.

Since joining miLEAD, what skills have you been able to develop?

I have been able to translate my research-focused training into non-academic work. I have been able to improve my teamwork skills as I have been involved in multiple inter-disciplinary teams. Of note, I have been exposed to a managerial role where I lead a team to conduct secondary research for a start-up, and this gave me plenty of opportunities for mentorship and interfacing with an industry client. Overall, I am very pleased with everything that I have learned by being part of miLEAD, and strongly believe that all these skills will help me thrive as a future life sciences consultant.

What has been one of your most rewarding experiences thus far working with miLEAD?

Leading a team through a successful project with a client who was impressed with our deliverables. The client quickly expressed that they wanted to have a second engagement with miLEAD, which confirmed that our hard work was directly strengthening relationships with our organization’s clients.
