Ph.D. Candidate in Pharmacology

How long have you been with miLEAD?

I’ve been with miLEAD since March 2020.

What is the focus of your research?

My research focuses on using structural and biochemical techniques to better understand the structure/function relationship of CYP2W1, a protein selectively expressed in colorectal cancer tissue. Information from these studies will be used to guide structure-based drug design for novel targeted therapies for colorectal cancer patients.

What are your current career goals?

I’m looking to complete a postdoc at a large pharmaceutical company with a structural biology team after defending.

What roles have you played on projects?

I’ve worked on teams as a consultant, project manager, and advisor.

What led you so seek out milead?

I chose to pursue miLEAD because of my previous work experience in industry. I came into graduate school knowing I wanted to return to industry, and miLEAD provided an opportunity for me to stay connected to the business world. I’ve had the chance to work with startups across the country in a variety of industries, keeping me connected to current business trends and allowing me to practice versatility as I continually adapt to problems in new contexts.

Since joining miLEAD, what skills have you been able to develop?

Since working on miLEAD project teams, I’ve learned how to efficiently address business problems in many different industries – some of which I have experience in and some of which I do not. Being able to enter unfamiliar spaces and address the needs of our clients has given me the confidence to continue to set and meet higher personal and professional goals. Serving on the Board of Directors, I’ve also had the chance to focus on developing my leadership skills. Learning how to effectively work with individuals with a diverse set of backgrounds and work styles has served me well in my pursuit of a PhD and will continue to help me succeed in future roles.

What has been one of your most rewarding experiences thus far working with miLEAD?

Working with the incredible team on the miLEAD Board of Directors has taught me so much both professionally and personally. I’m inspired by their work ethic and the support they give each other as well as consultants in the organization. They continually focus on finding new ways to give back to the consultants and ensure our organization is doing everything it can to support the transition of graduate students to nonacademic careers. I couldn’t imagine a better team to work with!
